Is art a waste of time?

Recently I had a conversation with a friend who self-identified as not having a single creative or artistic cell in her.

We discuss the purpose of handmade crafts.  She was trying to convince me why it is a waste of time and man power because mass production will be more efficient and less expensive.

DIY Green tissue holder

How many of you have a bag of tissue in your bag?  Well I have tissues available in all my commonly visited areas like the car, each room of the house, my backpack, work bag, makeup set bag (for film sets) and in my workshop.  When I am out and about I don’t want to carry a bulky box of tissue, even the small compact size ones.   There are tissue packages that are meant for pants pocket or purses, but those are too small and they are usually wrapped in plastic.   As you know I am huge in preserving and renewing the environment.  So I decided to make one that is reusable, plastic free and is machine washable. New year & new location for the creative den

Recently I made the move to a rural area.  I love the countryside.  I love the smell of grass, trees, flowers, the fresh air and the quietness. Yes, the daily commute time doubled compared to before.  But being able to come home to quietness and to be able to lift my head and see the stars on a clear night is worth the drive. Read More

Post craft fair thoughts

Last weekend my friend and I participated in our very first craft fair at the Stevenson community center, Richmond, BC.  It was busy from the moment the doors opened at 10am until the doors closed at 4pm, except for a few minutes of down time in between.  As a matter of fact we were told there was a long line up in the rain with customers waiting to enter the building even before the doors were open.   I had a blast at the craft fair meeting other vendors, seeing many beautiful handmade products and had great market research results on my own products.  My goal for participating in the craft fair was to get a feel of which of my products will attract the most attention.  It turns out that the deer hat received the most praise while the the fox hat ran a very close second as the most popular item.   Read More

Hats on, hats off

The idea of making warm, soft and fluffy hat for children and adults came from a meeting with my best friend.  We were discussing our product line for the upcoming Christmas craft fair at Steveston Community Center.   I had a long list of handmade items I want to tackle but as Don from Storybrand said “Noise is your enemy, it will confuse the customer.”, I decided to narrow down to a few items only.  Last year I made a fleece bunny hat for my little one and it was well praised by many.   This is how the making of warm fluffy fleece fluffy hat came about. Cookie time

Last month I introduced my little one to her very first high tea experience.  We had to book an appointment in advance, dress up in the morning and watched high tea etiquette videos on youtube before we go.    It was such a neat and intriguing experience to her that she is already talking about going back again. Personalized cup for grandpa

Last weekend I did a shop supply haul to add vinyl art to the mix of my art media.    I watched many you tube tutorials on applying vinyl decals and HTV (heat transfer vinyl) to cups, wood and fabric. Read More
